During a home game of the Mission Hills Grizzlies, senior linebacker #54, Scott "Scotty" Eveland sustained a critical head injury and was transported to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. A craniotomy was performed to relieve the swelling in the brain and save his life.
He had a 5% chance to survive the night. Scott's youth, strength, and thousands of prayers helped him make it through.
Scott was in a coma for almost a month, much of it on life support. Shortly after coming out of the coma, he was moved upstairs at Palomar to the Acute Rehabilitation Unit. Here he underwent physical and speech therapies.
He also underwent many other procedures, all which have helped at least a small amount. We have learned that all brain injuries are unique, thus virtually no prognosis has ever been given. Toward the end of January Scott was moved to Sharp Rehabilitation in San Diego. The facility and personnel at Palomar are top shelf!
The Sharp unit is more "brain injury specific" and Scott was ready to make the move. Scott continued to improve and met Britney. This young woman had sustained the same type of injuries Scott had, has been able to recover much more than Scott has thus far. She still visits him at his home to this day!
Eventually there came a time when Scott was not progressing in his recovery quickly enough for the physicians at Sharp to justify to Blue Cross insurance execs he needed to remain at the Sharp Facility.
Scott moved home in May of this year to once again live with his mom, step dad, brother, step brothers, his dogs and his cats. He has been able to enjoy the family pool and back yard. He has been to the movies and still enjoys watching football on TV.
Now 18, Scott was an honor student who loved to debate politics, world affairs and economics. He had hoped to attend UC San Diego after graduation and study medicine. He told his parents he wants to be a pediatrician. He had no intention of playing football past his senior year of High School.
What the future holds for Scott is uncertain at this time.
We thank you all for your support (which has come in many forms) and for the prayers that continue to flow even now, more than a year after Scott's injuries.
